What to Do If You Get a Letter from the IRS
Getting a letter from the IRS can be unsettling, but it doesn’t have to be a headache. Most of the time, the IRS is just trying to clear something up or get additional information. Here’s what to do if one shows up in your mailbox:
Start by reading it carefully.
IRS letters typically focus on a specific issue related to your tax return or account. The notice will outline what it’s about and what (if anything) you need to do. Sometimes it’s about a correction, sometimes it’s a payment request. Taking action early can help avoid interest or penalties.
Check the details.
If the IRS made changes to your return, compare their version to yours. If it looks right, just make a note of the correction on your own copy and file it away. Be sure to keep the original IRS notice with your tax records—you may need it down the line.
Be cautious about scams.
Scammers often pretend to be the IRS to trick people into sending money or personal info. Real IRS letters come by mail—not email, text, or social media. If something feels off, check directly with the IRS before taking any steps.
If you don’t agree with the IRS, speak up.
You’re not stuck with their decision if you think they got it wrong. Follow the instructions on the notice to respond. You may need to send additional documents or contact them by phone. Don’t ignore it—resolving the issue early can help avoid bigger problems later.
Follow instructions, especially if there’s a payment involved.
Only take action if the letter asks for it. That could mean sending documents, responding to a request, or making a payment. If you’re having trouble paying, the IRS has a few ways to work with you.
Don’t respond unless you’re told to.
Not every letter needs a reply. If the IRS needs to hear from you, they’ll say so. If you do need to get in touch, use the number listed at the top right of the letter—and have your tax return and the letter in front of you when you call.
